Motion design

Brief

Create a short or series of tv channel sting(s) based. on one of the following themes
- Sport channel 9
- Music channel 8
- Nature channel 7
- History channel 6
- News channel 5
Use your imagination and creative thinking for the branding of these.

We want you to produce ideas in a thumbnail and to storyboard your tv channel sting.
The sting should consist of a beginning, middle and ending.
Your thumbnails and animated graphics should work to the ratio of 16:9.
The idea of a tv sting is to present the channel in a new and interesting way, so try and avoid common visual tropes and cliches.
The sting should last 5 - 15 seconds.
Once you have a set storyboard you should use illustrator/photoshop to art direct the idea together, and then after effects/blender to animate a presentation to sell the concept.

RESEARCH

TV idents / stings
I found it quite difficult to find modern examples of tv idents & stings, but these are the ones that whilst researching I found to be the most impactful.
Lambie - Nairn
Martin Lambie Nairn is recognised for having redefined television brand identity design. He is known for creating the channel 4 blocks logo, which launched in November 1982. He created an identity for a channel which previously had none.
Red Bee Creative
Red Bee are a global creative agency based in London, they are specialists in TV and media.
Below are some TV stings & idents created by them.
Motion design
I also researched some general motion design as I thought it would be helpful.
Below are some examples of motion design that I found interesting.
Nature channels
I researched some nature specific idents, and below are the ones that I find interesting, due to their bright colours and interesting transitions.
Andy Goldsworthy
Andy's work explores the connections between nature and human creativity, using natural materials to create sculptures that highlight the beauty of impermanence and the passage of time. His approach is highly praised for its innovative use of found materials, and the intense, intimate relationship it fosters with the natural environment.
Agnes Denes
Agnes Denes' work is impactful because she pioneered ecological and land art, using monumental projects like wheatfield (1982) to challenge human's relationship with the environment and raise awareness of issues like waste, inequality, and the climate crisis. Her art, which integrates science and philosophy, encourages a shift in perspective, viewing land not just as a resource for profit but as a shared space for collective responsibility and ecological renewal.
Patrick Cabral
Patrick Cabral is a multi - disciplinary artist, who creates beautiful and intricate paper sculptures of animals, often commissioned by private collectors or public establishments. Patrick donated half of the sales proceeds of his endangered species collection, which featured portraits of pangolins, elephants, pandas and tigers, to the WWF Philippines. The large-scale works can take up to 3 months to reach completion.
TV station logos
I researched TV station logos, and below are the ones I personally think are the most effective. This seems to be due to the fact that they are bold but pared back, meaning they work well with colour and movement.
Branding
I looked at anything nature related.

initial ideas

Idea generation. I looked at the elements of the channel to see if anything stood out to me to use for the channel logo, motion design, or branding. I think the '7 at 7' concept will work really nicely. One thing in particular stood out to me, which was that spirals occur extremely often in nature and natural settings, also in artwork that is related to nature. I think that this will influence how things will move with my motion design. I also thought it would be interesting to work with the way that nature in general moves, which is pretty unpredictable.
I think it would be good to have a clean, simple, adaptable logo due to the fact that nature is very messy and abstract, as this will create contrast.

Logo thumbnails
I initially started with creating logos focused on using elements of nature but soon noticed that 7 & N flow really nicely together, so decided to work with this.

Motion thumbnails
Thumbnail ideas for the sting, with start, beginning and end frames. I really like the idea of the 7 turning into the N so this is definitely something I want to try to animate, and see what happens.

DEVELOPMENT

Logo ideas - I figured out pretty quickly that 7 & N flow really nicely together so I wanted to experiment with that logo wise.

First try at motion graphics
I followed a tutorial and tried an animation of my logo and word mark. I layered some stock sound to make audio for the channel.
I changed my approach and decided to just work with the 'N' instead.

Final designs

I wanted something that was adaptable, that could easily fit into any program that the channel needed.
I think I managed to create something that accomplishes this.
